One of the much needed and critical services within the health sector in the country is the unavailability of comprehensive laboratory services, which results in clinicians having to refer patients to other countries such as Senegal. Unfortunately, this is not affordable for the majority of patients and doctors are then obliged to treat cases based on clinical signs and symptoms.
Sharab Medical Center is grateful to Japan’s Grant Assistance For Grassroots Human Security Projects for providing us with a grant to establish a multi-specialty laboratory in the country. This grant will enable the center to provide the much-needed laboratory expertise and technologies to effectively and accurately diagnose disease conditions. Our objective is to ensure that both private and public have access to these services without having the need to travel abroad. Laboratory services resulting from this project will also include those required for intensive care and Accident and emergency units. This grant, therefore, will ultimately contribute to saving lives and improving the health security of all Gambians

Sharab Medical Director Statement
Sharab Medical Center is a private facility that aims to bring high quality affordable medical services to all Gambians. Since its establishment, we have expanded consistently and rapidly to bring hitherto unavailable and much needed medical technologies and services to the health system of the country.
The presence of Sharab in the country has saved Gambians, and by extension, the government a lot of money saved many lives and made many lives more tolerable. services which were not available in The Gambia were brought in by Sharab and hence people who had to travel abroad to get these services could now access it at their doorstep. In addition, people who would not have otherwise afforded traveling and hence suffer and die with their ailments could now be saved at affordable costs. Some of these facilities include Endoscopic surgeries e.g. for prostate disease, Upper and Lower GI endoscopies, penile implants, etc.
In fact, these developments have resulted in something that has never before happened in The Gambia: people traveling from beyond Senegambia, to The Gambia for medical tourism. We have had patients from Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia, who knew about our services from the internet and friends, travel to Sharab Medical center and stay in a hotel, for treatment in The Gambia for services not readily available in their country. I am happy to say that all these individuals received successful surgery and returned very happy to their countries. I am sure that we will get more referrals to the country and hence the more need to encourage Sharab to set up the Gambia for medical tourism.
